Anansi’s Web

Anansi is a figure from West African orature (oral literature) that has been shared from the ancestors to elders to children and beyond. Anansi is described as a powerful creator deity, a trickster hero, an immortal spider, and a symbol of resistance. Anansi is also known as the one that brings wisdom and knowledge to the people.

Anansi’s Web connects us to our people, our history, and ourselves. It honors the memory of the great Anansi, W.E.B. Du Bois, who connected theory to practice in the Black liberation struggle in the U.S., on the African continent, and in the African diaspora.

An Ethiopian Proverb, 'When the webs of the spider join, they can trap a lion.' The background of this graphic is light pink with a white spider web. In the top right corner are 3 Ethiopian flags.
